Allopurinol hypersensitivity syndrome

---is characterized by severe dermatologic manifestations and sometimes multiorgan failure. It is believed to be due to accumulation of a metabolite and may be dose related. Risk can be decreased by following labeling recommendations for dose adjustment in renal failure, but such recommendations are often ignored.
