Variations in cardiology practice

Regional variation in practice and health expenditures was a hot topic in the health care reform debate. Much of this variation was attributed to greed although direct evidence to support that claim was lacking. Cardiology seems to have taken the brunt of this accusation. What does research evidence tell us about reasons for variations in cardiology practice? The fear of malpractice suits is the main reason.
