Left ventricular dysfunction in critical illness

---is common and may occur in the absence of prior known heart disease. Acute coronary syndrome, takotsubo cardiomyopathy (probably under-recognized in critical illness), global LV dysfunction due to inflammatory mediators and other ill-understood causes are responsible.
